Rowing Video Of The Week: Training for Rio with Matt Gotrel and Team GB

Matt Gotrel: Rowing to Rio (Screen capture)

This week's video comes to us thanks to James Poole and Loughborough University, and features reigning world champion Matt Gotrel, who reflects on a golden 2015, and offers insights into the daily life training with what has become the best rowing team in the world.

What strikes us most is the personality that shines through—how humble Gotrel remains, and how much perspective he has about the sport, the Olympics, and the day-to-day struggle to get better, on and off the water. And, perhaps that is one of the biggest reasons why Team GB has dominated the medal table at the international level for some time now—the system is in place, the expectations are clear, and the best athletes earn their stripes competing for places on a squad with some of the best rowers in the world, who just happen to be their teammates. (Sounds a little like the U.S. women's team, doesn't it?)

You can read more about Gotrel's background, which includes a sailing career that saw him compete at the 2006 world championships, via the official website of British Rowing.

Much more on the outlook for Rio to come over the next few months. In the meantime, do you have a submission for 'Video Of The Week?' Shoot us an email, send us your suggestions via Twitter, or get in touch via our Facebook or Google+ pages.
