This week's video comes to us from the Syracuse Orange men ( not the Orangemen, at least, since 2004), and embodies the best of the banter-laden modern approach to rowing training camp films, with some nifty camera angles and a Lana Del Rey soundtrack ( we're fans of LDR—and acronyms, evidently—here at RR as well ). Take special note of the stretching routine included at the beginning. While most Northeastern collegiate programs visit Florida to escape the winter cold, even the panhandle experienced the wrath of the polar vortex that descended upon much of the U.S. earlier this month. For Syracuse, however, even the record cold in Florida no doubt felt like a welcome relief from the relative 'Syberia' at home (where temperatures dropped as low as -8 degrees F on January 3rd). The Huskies are stacked, feature an Olympic silver medalist in Conlin McCabe , and recently showed that (despite their relative youth) they are nails, walking away from Cambridge on the Boat Race course (for more on that crew, click here ). At this point in time, UW boasts the best program top to bottom—they are loaded and will be hard to beat in any event. Still, there are new challenges for Washington: the departure of Luke McGee and the new freshman rule may make the frosh event an interesting one this year. 2. California If anyone is going to upset Washington in the varsity eight this year, Cal might just be the one to do it—the Golden Bears have great top-end speed. This week's video gives us an inside look at the Syracuse men's Florida training camp, mixing in some nice on-the-water shots with a few descriptive sequences from outside the training regimen. Looks like the Orange had a productive trip, with plenty of time to relax and soak up the warmth before heading back indoors upon their return home. It's a fairly quiet time in the rowing world, as the Northern Hemisphere prepares to embark on yet another indoor season following the holidays, and with the Australian Youth Olympic Festival Down Under now in the books. The 2013 AYOF was a great success, and provided a solid preview of the next generation of Aussie, Kiwi and British Olympians, including sculling standouts Luke Moon and Jack Beaumont of Team GB. th <br> The Canadian women laid down a marker in Munich over the weekend, with the U.S. women's eight absent and currently in the process of reshuffling/reloading on home waters for the June 22nd naming date, when the USA men's and women's quads will also be announced, and the U.S. Olympic Rowing Team for London will be complete. The Canadian lineup in Munich featured Princeton grad Lauren Wilkinson (winner of the 2011 RoRy for Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year), another Princeton alum in 2006 grad Andréanne Morin (training for her third Olympics), two-time Big 10 champ with Michigan (and Beijing Olympian in the Canadian W4x), Janine Hanson , Syracuse alum Natalie Mastracci , and 2004 NCAA runner up with Yale, Ashley Brzozowicz , who raced in the CAN W8+ in Beijing along with Morin, and who was recently interviewed by World Rowing, in the video posted above. While the headline story on the heavyweight side of the regatta is, without question, the incredible performance of the Washington men's team from top to bottom, there are a number of other crews deserving of recognition, not least of which is Syracuse . The Orange had a fantastic regatta, racing well in the heat, and even better in the rep on Thursday afternoon, when they edged Yale by 0.19 for a place in the A/B semi. But the Orange weren't done. In the semifinal, No. 8 Syracuse chased down No. 5 Princeton, edging the Tigers for a place in the varsity eight grand final on Saturday. Having already achieved excellent results, the Orange stepped up and had a great race in the grands, placing fifth overall ahead of a Boston University crew that had been moving quite well throughout the weekend.
