The Lightweight Boat Races, 2015: Tabs Take Down Oxford in Henley

Image
This past weekend marked the renewal of the Henley Boat Races rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge, and while the bookmakers have 'tabbed' Oxford as the favorites in the men's and women's Boat Races on the Tideway, Cambridge scored not one but two victories over the Dark Blues just a few miles up the Thames.

Video Of The Week: Which Blue Are You?

Image
This week's (admittedly a bit silly, but certainly very appropriate) video comes to us from Merrie Englande, where the Henley Boat Races are in the books, and the Oxford and Cambridge Men's Boat Race is set to take over the Tideway this Sunday. The video gives us a bit of a humorous, inside look at the Boat Race Gala Dinner, which took place on 21 March and saw friendly Boat Race and Olympic rivals rubbing elbows at the London Film Museum. The Henley Boat Races (comprised of the Oxbridge Women's and Lightweight Boat Races), while traditionally held on the same stretch of the Thames as Henley Royal Regatta, were transferred to Eton Dorney last weekend due to rough weather—and the results were convincingly Dark Blue . In fact, Oxford swept four of four varsity events over Cambridge this year (for a full rundown of the events at Dorney, see here .) And, unfortunately for Cambridge, we see that trend continuing this coming weekend—our pick for the 2013 Boat Race is Oxford...

The Henley Boat Races: Tom Copeland Reports from Oxfordshire

Dispatches from Henley: Tom Copeland of Inner Rowing provides coverage of the 2012 Henley Boat Races, with photography courtesy of Iain Weir of RowingPhotography.co.uk . CULRC leads OULRC (Photo: © Iain Weir) It was under clear, sunny skies that Oxford and Cambridge met for this year's Women's and Lightweight Men's boat races in Henley-on-Thames. The first two races down the course were the Intercollegiate Men's and Women's races which were added to the race programme for the first time last year. With Downing, Cambridge's fastest women's crew, unable to attend, Emmanuel took up the challenge of Pembroke College Ox. but were unable to match the pace of a crew which contained both Natalie Redgrave and Brianna Stubbs, both of whom were members of last year's winning Oxford Blue Boat. Pembroke crossed the line with well over a length of clear water separating the crews and having never been bothered by Emmanuel. In the men's Intercollegiate ...

Video of the Week: CUWBC Training Camp in Soustons

CUWBC Training Camp 2012 from James Appleton on Vimeo . This week's video comes to us courtesy of James Appleton, and features some stunning visuals (as well as a healthy bit of banter/faffing about off the water) from the Cambridge University Women's Boat Club training camp in Soustons, France last month. The CUWBC squad is gearing up for the 2012 edition of the Henley Boat Races, which, like their counterpart, the Boat Race , match crews from Oxford and Cambridge against one another on the Thames. The Henley Boat Races, however, take place (as you might have guessed) in Henley-on-Thames, and cover the same course as Henley Royal Regatta (albeit in reverse), while the Boat Race takes place on the Tideway in London, from Putney Bridge to Chiswick Bridge (approximately). While the Boat Race features the heavyweight men from Oxford and Cambridge, the Henley Boat Races include the openweight women, lightweight men, and lightweight women. For more information on the Henle...

Maelstroms and Hailstorms: CULRC and OULRC Trial VIIIs on the Henley Reach

While the day began in fine fashion, the weather was extremely unpredictable and the racing close on the Henley Reach, as the men's lightweight crews from Cambridge ( CULRC ) and Oxford ( OULRC ) came together for the intra-squad Trial VIIIs event on December 18th. There was a weigh-in prior to racing so that race-day conditions would be simulated to the fullest extent. Matthew Pinsent was on hand to serve as umpire, and he had much to do, as the start of the racing was delayed due to barge traffic on the course. At long last, 'King' and 'Ace' of Cambridge were allowed to race, and it began in very dramatic fashion, with a clash of blades near the start, forcing Pinsent to restart the match with a greater distance between crews. Following the restart, the racing between King and Ace was very close, though Ace (racing a Hudson, in what appears to be a University-wide shift away from Empacher) was able to edge out to a small lead near the halfway point, though King...

The 'Other' Boat Races -- Oxford and Cambridge Square off at Henley

Image
After Oxford upset favo(u)rites Cambridge in the Boat Race on Saturday afternoon, the stage was set for the Henley Boat Races, which featured match-ups between the Cambridge and Oxford women, lightweight women, and lightweight men, and took place on Sunday, March 27th. These races are rowed at Henley-on-Thames, and go with the stream ('from the Royal Regatta finish to the mid-point on the Temple Island' -- the opposite direction to Henley Royal Regatta). The course is just over 2,000m in length, rather than the 4 miles 374 yards of the Tideway course (from Putney to Chiswick in London) on which the Cambridge and Oxford heavyweight men's squads currently race. The Henley Boat Races began in 1975, as a contest between men's lightweight crews from Oxford and Cambridge. The women's race was added in 1977, followed shortly thereafter by the women's reserve race. In parallel fashion to Goldie v. Isis on the men's side, the women's reserve crews are called ...
