The 30 Best Rowing Coaches of All Time, Part 1

Image
The RowingRelated Top 30 (Photo: 1899 Cornell Rowing Team) ROWING is a sport heavily steeped in history. It can boast some of the longest running traditions in contemporary sport, from the Doggett’s Coat & Badge , to Henley Royal Regatta , to the Boat Races of both the Oxford and Cambridge variety as well as that between Harvard and Yale. Learning from the best has always been one of our top priorities here on RR, and so here we look back at our picks for the Top 30 Rowing Coaches of All Time , in hopes of both appreciating those that have gone before as well as the excellence of our contemporaries. As with all ranking systems, it's not perfect, but it's a start—and the hope is that it will generate discussion not only about the past, but also about the future of our sport as we move further into the 21st century. Also note: There are regrettably few women in this list, but that is a reflection of a general, historical and present underrepresentation of women in...

Video Of The Week: #TBT to a Stellar Season in 2015 with the Cornell Lightweights

Image
Big Red at Henley Royal Regatta (Screen capture) This week's combo #TBT-Video Of The Week post comes to us thanks to Cornell Rowing, whose lightweights made their dynastic aspirations clear earlier this year with a second-straight undefeated season, culminating in an IRA title.

The 2015 RoRy Awards, Part Two: Celebrating the Best in College Rowing

Image
Rowing fans, it's time for Part Two of the 2015 RoRy Awards, celebrating the best athletes, coaches, and performances in intercollegiate rowing this year. And, there was no shortage of material for the RoRy Voting Committee to consider, not least of which were two unprecedented performances at IRAs and NCAAs last spring.

Cornell Lightweights Have Had Tough Road to Semifinals in Temple, and Face Toughest Competition Yet Saturday

The Cornell lightweight men have shown poise throughout the first three rounds of the Temple Challenge Cup, but will all these tight races take a toll heading into the semifinals?

Video(s) Of The Week: Texas Takes on San Diego, Cornell Lightweights Dominate Dartmouth

Texas Rowing's Dave O'Neill on the cover of a recent issue of ROWING Magazine This week's double feature combines two separate dual meets. The first took place in Austin, Texas, where the Longhorns took on the University of San Diego , and the results were another feather in Dave O'Neill's already well-feathered cap (maybe cowboy hat now? Do you put feathers in those? He'll figure it out), as Texas swept the Toreros across the three NCAA events.

2015 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Preview: RowingRelated Preseason Rankings

Washington hoists the Pac-12 varsity eight trophy, 2014 (Photo: B. Kitch) The 2015 IRA field looks very familiar, though the power struggle at the top may just yield different results this time around. The margins were slimmer last season for the Washington Huskies, but the Ten Eyck results were just the same. Can anyone stop the Huskies this spring?

Video(s) Of The Week: Cornell Trains for Sprints; the Pac-12 Women's Coaches Sound Off

This week's first video comes to us from Big Red, who are prepping for this weekend's showdown in Worcester to determine the fastest crews in the East. Cornell enters the racing as the fifth-ranked varsity eight in a field that has seen some changes over the last 12 months, with Charley Butt taking the helm at Harvard (No. 2) following the loss of Harry Parker, and Yale making good on early-season potential to claim a No. 1 seed. The top of the field is likely to be very tightly packed, with Brown and Princeton not far off the top two crews—will we see a new heavyweight champion crowned on Lake Quinsigamond?

IRA and ACRA Rowing Programs: RR Picks and Predictions for 2013

Image
Cal and Washington at the 2012 Pac-12 Championships (Photo: B. Kitch)  IRA Men 1. Washington Our top pick for 2013 is Washington. The Huskies are stacked, feature an Olympic silver medalist in Conlin McCabe , and recently showed that (despite their relative youth) they are nails, walking away from Cambridge on the Boat Race course (for more on that crew, click here ). At this point in time, UW boasts the best program top to bottom—they are loaded and will be hard to beat in any event. Still, there are new challenges for Washington: the departure of Luke McGee and the new freshman rule may make the frosh event an interesting one this year. 2. California If anyone is going to upset Washington in the varsity eight this year, Cal might just be the one to do it—the Golden Bears have great top-end speed. Led by a strong Serbian talent in Jovan Jovanovic (a sophomore who stroked the eight in the fall and is a Serbian U23 and junior national team member), fellow Serbians Igo...

Live Race Coverage from Boston, Princeton This Weekend

Tigers in action on Lake Carnegie this weekend in Princeton (Photo: B. Kitch) There is a ton of intercollegiate racing on the schedule for this weekend, with some of the nation's top teams going toe-to-toe on both coasts. The Stanford Invitational and Lake Natoma Invitational out west, pitting the No. 3 Cal men against No. 4 (tied with Princeton) Wisconsin in the varsity eight on Saturday morning, while on the women's side, Pac-12 powers No. 8 Cal and No. 9 Stanford will welcome non-conference rivals Brown, Wisconsin and Texas, among others. Meanwhile, in the Northeast, the No. 2 Harvard heavyweight men are set to take on No. 4 Princeton and MIT, while the Crimson lightweight squad will race MIT and Dartmouth in Boston. For a link to live, streaming coverage of the action in Boston, follow the link below beginning at 7am Eastern Daylight Time: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/harvard.portal# On Lake Carnegie, the No. 5 Princeton women will be going head-to-hea...

RR Weekend Review: Cal v. Washington, Tigers Victorious, UVA's Sauer ACC Coach of the Year

Image
National Team: Congratulations to Gevvie Stone and Ken Jurkowski , who had success at the first NSR over the weekend. Jurkowski, who explains that he has only been on the water for three weeks in his post-race interview with USRowing, won the Men's 1x by a narrow 1.2 seconds over Glenn Ochal , who has been in the 2x with Warren Anderson for some time. Unfortunately, we didn't see Anderson, nor did we see Will Miller , both of whom finished ahead of Ochal at the Speed Order earlier this month (Anderson won the event, with Miller finishing in 2nd place, 5 and 1.5 seconds ahead of Ochal, respectively). Where were Miller and Anderson this weekend? We thought they might be rowing the 2x and focusing on that, but they were beaten in the 2x at the same April 1st Speed Order by Ochal and Piermarini. It's difficult to understand how McLaren decided whom to send over to NSR, as Silas Stafford and Sam Stitt (who won the Men's 2- on Friday) were the only sweep rowers to make t...

Lightweight Speed: Spring Predictions

Image
Newell Boathouse (Photo: B. Kitch) The Fall season was dominated by Princeton , but Harvard had quite a showing at both the Charles and the Princeton Chase. Cornell's Varsity performed very well in Boston, but lacks the depth of the front runners. Yale has a ton of power, but as yet they're not applying it well enough to keep pace with their two main rivals. Georgetown also had solid showings at both the Charles and the Chase, but is anyone going to catch Princeton this year? Lightweight racing is almost always close. For that reason, and because all the programs are given very similar parts to make up the whole, it's considered by some to be the most interesting form of racing. You are unlikely to see the kind of separation from the field that Cal and Washington had in the Varsity VIII last June. Still, the Tigers had a fantastic Fall. Not only did the Varsity break the course record at the Charles (by twelve seconds), but also the Tiger JV took seventh overall. ...
