Flashback Friday: Winning the Thames Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta

Thames Rowing Club launching on the Tideway (Screen capture)

This week's #FBF edition Video Of The Week comes to us from Henley-on-Thames, and features a look back at a historic season for Thames Rowing Club, winners of the Thames Challenge Cup in 2015.

The video offers insight not only into the mindset of the crew heading into the regatta, but also the daily rowing-life balance that all crew members had to strike to make the dream come true. It started, like so many of these stories, with a change in the club culture, thanks in no small part to head coach Ben Lewis.

"The club has been moving in the right direction for some time," Lewis says, "but the men's squad was just a little bit behind the curve. The culture just wasn't quite right. They got a big telling off in October 2014—it was a question of trying to realign a few things, and, to be honest, just get them training."

Despite having to train separately, much of the time in pairs, Thames' rowers came together at the right moment, and didn't miss their chance, earning a thrilling, comeback victory in the semifinal against University Barge Club, USA, before toppling RTHC Bayer Leverkusen in the final.
